A Sinister Night

Halloween Spooky Stories👻🎃
Topic 3#

In the bathroom, showering myself with cold water, I try to freeze my mind from thinking about the unpleasant thing I met earlier, but the playback of the weird incident could not be stopped at all.

After a hectic day on campus and doing my assignment research in the library until eight-thirty in the night, I walked back to my hostel, with my mind overwhelmed by all the assignments and courses works that I had to complete.

At the ground floor near the hostel staircase, I felt something fall on my shoulder.

“Ew, a cigarette butt!” I grumbled at the same time I brushed the cigarette butt off my cloth.

It was also at that moment, another cigarette butt dropped right on my shoe, leaving grey ashes on the white canvas.

I immediately looked up and found who I should blame for this nuisance act.

Two young men, who seemed to be college students like me were leaning on the corridor wall on the fourth floor. Although the surrounding was so dark, I could see the glowing cigarettes on their hands and the smoke that lingered around their faces.

I was in a bad mood at that time. Without much thought, I raised my voice to yell at the two men.

“Hey! Where are your manners? How dare you throw your cigarettes on me! “

I was sure that the smokers could hear me clearly. They looked at each other, feeling embarrassed, and then they apologized to me by saying “sorry” in a timid and vague voice tone.

“Don’t you know that smoking is prohibited in the hostel? Both of you better keep away your stuff, or else I will call the management department!” I yelled.

Both of them seemed to be frightened. They quickly hid the packs of cigarettes in their pockets and went back to their room.

After that unhappy episode, I entered my room and smashed the door heavily. My roommate instantly sensed that something was wrong with me.

“Why the grumpy face?” He asked.

“Two guys on the fourth floor smoked and threw their cigarette butts on me! It’s so gross!” I complained.

“What? Really?” He stared at me with a shocking pale face.

“I know how much you hate people who smoke around you, but don’t you think you are overreacting about it? By the way, I already gave them a scold for smoking.”

“Did you clearly see which room they were from?” My roommate kept on asking. He must have hated smokers so much.

“I’m not that sure, but they are from the fourth floor, should be either room 408 or room 409. Perhaps they are new students, I have never seen their faces before.”

“But, this building only has three stories…” before my roommate could finish his sentence, I already felt goosebumps covering every inch of my skin.

“Argh! That is enough! I should just forget about it and pretend that nothing has happened,” I tell myself as I pull myself away from the flashback and turn off the shower tap.

Shivering, maybe because of the cold bath just now or because of the lingering thought about the creepy encounter, I dry myself with a towel and leave the bathroom.

“Hey, you looked sick. Are you feeling unwell?” asks my roommate who is holding his towel and waiting for his turn to use the bathroom.

My thought tells me to pretend that everything is fine, but I'm sure that my face can't hide my fear.

“After that creepy stuff, for sure I wouldn’t be feeling well!” I murmur.

“What creepy stuff?”

“I just told you about it before I bath! And I hate to have to talk about it again!”

“How is that possible?

“Today I have an extraordinary meeting at my society club, from the evening until nine o’clock just now.

“When I came back here late, you were already in the bathroom, singing like an opera actor while showering,” says my roommate in a chuckling voice tone.

I don’t remember singing in the bathroom.

And another wave of goosebumps, bigger than the previous one, invades the whole of my skin.

What a night it is. Could it be that I am too tired and overwhelmed by my work? Or should I consider moving into another hostel?

I can’t figure out anything but just keep rotating my eyes between the white canvas shoe with a grey spot, the roommate standing in front of me, and the quiet bathroom that I just used a minute ago.
