Christmas Night

Christmas Night

The savoury scent of maple syrup on fluffy pancakes with hot cups of Milo, coffee, tea deliciously

indulged for supper. We sit curled up with cushions and plushies in front of the telly. Laughter bubbles

at humorous scenes of “Little Shop of Horrors”. Heads bob with grooving dance movements at catchy

80’s tunes. Little Waffle sleeps beside the couch on her layers of cushy dog towels. Peace resounds in

the comfort of our cozy living room and each other’s presence with our daily little routine. After all,

it’s a holiday so time is on everyone’s hand to spend with each other. This is a typical Christmas night

in my household.

Every mall’s center court is extravagantly decorated. Tall trees tower with ornaments of candy canes,

golden bells, pretty angels, ball ornaments, you name it. Beautiful stars are put to finish the top distinct

to each tree’s accessorized theme. Wreaths of green and red are draped upon standing structures.

Adorable snowmen make their appearance both small and large. White solid material holds their shape,

and a cotton exterior gives them a fluff.  How wondrous are such snowmen made with no snow! Santa

on his sleigh is pulled by Rudolph and his reindeers buddies made suspended in the air by wires and

string. Tendrils of lights are hung everywhere. They sparkle elegantly making the surroundings beam

with brilliance. The various colors are enough to take one’s breath away. Friends, families, couples fill

the area and snap away at the camera. Moments captured encapsulated within photos that would go

down memory lane. The yearly Christmas classics are projected from the speakers. They echo through

isle walkways, along shop lots of boutiques, eateries. As the setting is thronged with people, so

prominent is the Christmas cheer, buzzing with a spirit of festivity. On a night where my family and I

so happen to be out, it is then that we get a taste of the celebratory vibe too.

If we’re about to travel to one of our destinations, my dad brings along a bunch of Christmas CDs. Yes,

you read correctly, CDs. The ones appropriate to be played only during December. The lyrics sink into

our souls and we enjoyingly sway to the familiar tunes. On our home stereo, the same CDs are played

as background music that fill the space with harmonious melody. Would we gather and sing our hearts

out? Not necessarily. Most of the time, we’re about our daily business: hanging in our rooms, prepping

for mealtime, feeding our dogs, sweeping the floor. Ritually going through the motions with the only

difference of the Christmas tunes.

On a Christmas night, the seasonal mood is amplified even digitally. My Instagram feed is filled with

the mandatory take a picture with a Christmas tree frame. Not to mention, ads of sales and discounts

with a Christmas jingle. The incoming bombard of stories of my friends and acquaintances. Almost

infectious are their delightful smiles and radiating countenances around loved ones in a celebratory

setting: grand dinners, gifts exchanges, house caroling, church events, count downs, home gatherings.

Would we decorate our house with fairy lights and hues of red and green? Cook up a storm and invite

friends over? Not necessarily.

You would probably be wondering why the diminished sense of celebration by now. Why not join in

the fun that happens merely once a year? Why go through the typical mundane routine when the

opportunity to break out of it is well at hand? As perplexing as this might sound, I celebrate Christmas

every day in my life. To me, Christmas is a celebration of Jesus as it commonly may be to others as

well. The celebration of the yoke destroying, burden removing power in our lives. That someone came

to empower us to preach good tidings to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to them

who are held captive. Hence the “Christ” in “Christ”mas! Thus, the celebration of the anointed one is

not confined to just one day but incorporated into my everyday lifestyle. If this were not so, it would an

annual button that’s switched on and off. Peculiar as this may be? Truly! But the joy and reassurance it

brings to be mindful of my Christmas’ reason is freeing. It relinquishes agonizing anxiety, petty worry,

and extreme distress as I work out the hustle of life throughout my year. Therefore, Christmas is

important enough to me to celebrate the reason not the season. My night on Christmas is just like any

other.
